The town of Turgovishte is situated at 170 metres altitude and has a population of 47 566 people. It is 339 kilometres to the north-east of the city of Sofia, 41 kilometres to the west of the town of Shumen, 25 kilometres to the north-west of the town of Veliki Preslav and 100 kilometres to the north-east of the city of Veliko Turnovo. The proximity of the town to the exit points of the country – the town of Varna (110 kilometres away) and the town of Russe (100 kilometres away) make a natural crossroad of strategic importance. The town of Turgovishte is an administrative centre of a county and the seat of the provincial administration in the North-Eastern Bulgaria. The town itself has developed from centre of craftsmanship and education to an administrative and provincial centre. Here more than 30 buildings with interesting architecture can be found, most of them in the old quarter by the name of “Varosha”.
