The Dobrich region is made up of eight counties: the town of Dobrich itself, the Dobrich county, Balchik, Shabla, Kavarna, Tervel, General Toshevo and Krushary. The region is situated in the Danube hilly plain on the Dobrudzha plateau.
The current conditions presuppose the dual role of the town of Dobrich – it is a county itself and at the same time is the seat of another county\'s administration, which encompasses 67 towns and villages. Its role as the sole administrative, economic and service centre is defining the influence and the relationships of the city with the other towns and villages and these relationships in turn are determined by a number of social, economic and technological factors.
The town of Dobrich is the second biggest economic centre in North-east Bulgaria. Its territory is highly urbanized. The real estate market is really flourishing in the region during the last years, due to the spirit of entrepreneurship in the local youth and the ambitions of the municipality, striving to foster the development of the counties. It is here that new business ventures are welcomed and supported most vigorously. The well-built educational system, consisting of pre-school, secondary and higher education, provides fair chances to the young people of the region to choose a career. The different educational institutions offer a wide choice of available specialities and good quality of teaching. As already mentioned, there are numerous pre-school, secondary and higher educational institutions and during the last eight years the number of students has increased tenfold, an excellent foundation for rapid development in the region. A lot of national and international exhibitions are hosted in the town and the region as a whole. There is even a specialized entity, taking care of the organization and carrying out of trade fairs, shows and specialized exhibitions, as well as offering special services, aimed at boosting the agricultural production and general trade with goods, both for domestic and international market.
The road system facilitates easy access to every part of the region and the country. The town of Dobrich own ring-road efficiently accommodates the whole traffic from Varna-Albena-Balchik-General Toshevo to Silistra, Shumen and Rousse.
The town of Balchik is 36 km to the north-east of Varna, some 501 km away from Sofia and is set on the very shore of Black Sea. The is a small port here, but it is used only by medium-sized passenger and cargo ships. The international airport of Varna, some 40 km away from the town of Balchik, is handling its access to the world too.
The little village of Kranevo is 20 km away from Varna and only 2 km from the sea resort of Albena. The village has built itself a reputation as major recreation centre for children, due to the numerous pupils\' summer camps here. The village offers the supreme combination of free running mineral water, fresh air, crystal clear sea and wonderful beaches.
The county of Kavarna possesses unique nature, which has predetermined the its social and economic standing and future development. The county encompasses the easternmost part of the Danube plain and is part of the Dobrudzha\'s sea-shore. Its centre, the town of General Toshevo, is 25 km away from the town of Dobrich to the north-east. It is a typical agricultural county with few enterprises, and its economic development is at the top of the agenda for the county\'s council. The manufacturing industry is well represented, and machine building, wood processing and ceramic enterprises can be found also. The food and beverage industry has experienced a real boost, due to abundance of raw materials. A lot of small and medium-sized companies now can meat, produce Bulgarian cheese, vegetable oil, sausages and other foods. There are 40 villages in this county, the biggest one being Kardam, Spasovo, Krassen, Rossitza, Vassilevo, Presselentzi. The main occupation is in agriculture, and the primary cultures are cereals.
The region has two ports - the one in Kavarna, the other in Balchik. The first one can handle ships with total tonnage of 6 000, and can accommodate small tankers and passenger ships. The large port of Varna is not very far away and can accommodate larger ships. Apart from the cargo port, Balchik has also a yachting one, which recently was included as a stop in several international regattas. The proximity to the Danube river offers another cheap way for transport and communication.
