THE BOURGAS REGION

The town of Bourgas is the second provincial centre on the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. It is situated on the westernmost point of the Bourgas bay on an peninsula, surrounded by three lakes – namely the Bourgasko, Atanassovsko and Mandrensko lakes. The fastest way to get there is by plane. The flight from Sofia takes only 40 minutes. The perfect combination from sun, sea and local colour makes the town the wharf for many tourist dreams. If you add the artistic spirit of the Bourgas people, you end up with incredible atmosphere for relaxation and a safe haven from the rats\' race. Mineral springs are  strewed along the Bulgarian coastline, the healing properties of which are fully utilized. As to sports, the list is long and comprises of water skiing, yachting, powerboats\' driving, water wheels, paragliding , tennis, horse  riding, boating along the Ropotamo river, etc.

The town of Nessebar is one of the oldest European towns, situated 37 kilometres to the north-east from the town of Bourgas and 429 kilometres from the capital city of Sofia. The Nessebar\'s beach is considered the best on our Black Sea coast. The town itself is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Bulgaria. The Old town of Nessebar is proclaimed a historic monument of culture under the protection of UNESCO. The old buildings are renovated and the new ones are  built in ancient style. Both Slanchev Bryag resort and the town of Nessebar have regular bus lines to and from the rest of the country.  The environment is the decisive factor in formation of the basis of the branch structure of the county\'s economy, namely tourism, rehabilitation and sports. The predominant part of the  tourist infrastructure is concentrated in the Slanchev Bryag and Elenite resorts, the town of Nessebar and the villages of St. Vlas and Ravda, where great number of tourist complexes and restaurants can be found. The town of Nessebar, an archaeological and architectural reserve, is sited on a tiny rocky peninsula in the northern part of the Bourgas bay.

The village of St. Vlas is situated along the coast of Black Sea and at the foot of the southernmost slopes of the eastern part of the Stara Planina mountain. The superb combination of mountain and sea turn it into a village of unique climate, favouring the climatic treatment of pulmonary diseases. The beaches are with a total length of one kilometre and average width of 16 metres. The surroundings of the village are a busy tourist area. Here the initiative of the people is displayed at its best with a number of small glamorous hotels, boarding houses, villas and restaurants, scattered along the coast and the hillside. The view from the village of St. Vlas to the open sea and the Nessebar\'s bay is breathtaking.

The Slanchev Bryag resort is the largest one in Bulgaria.  The beach is long nearly 6 kilometres, and at places quite wide, covered with fine sands. The resort is exceptionally busy in the summer, but the flower beds and huge parks waft fresh air to the place. The Aquapark has a  slow food restaurant, fast food one and five bars with over 500 seats. In the complex among the pools there is a discotheque too.

The village of Ravda is a cosy little settlement by the sea, some 30 kilometres away from the town of Bourgas near the road to Nessebar. The village has several beaches on its bays, ranging up to Nessebar.  The fine golden sand is  kept ecologically clean.  There are opportunities to practice different water sports. The village of Ravda is just one kilometre away from the main road Bourgas – Nessebar. No big towns or works are sited around it – it is and remains an ecologically clean settlement with wonderful air, seducing for a quiet family rest. In the village most of the tourist premises are private rooms or small family hotels. It also boasts many restaurants, pubs, refreshment stalls and discotheques.

The town of Obzor is situated 65 kilometres to the south of the town of Varna, 73 kilometres north of the town of Bourgas and 530 kilometres to the east of the capital city of Sofia, with a population totalling 2000 people. It is a sea resort, sited on a wide bay at the tipping point of the eastern part of the Stara Planina mountain and the Black Sea. The beach length is 6 kilometres, the longest one between the Slanchev Bryag and Zlatni Pyasatzi resorts.

The town of Pomorie is situated on a narrow rocky peninsula, stretching 3,5 kilometres into the Black Sea, some 20 kilometres away from the town of Bourgas. The enchanting scenery attracts a lot of tourists with its abundance of greenery and beauty.

The region of Primorsko is famous for its “sparkling” ten kilometres long beach line, the longest and the most attractive on the whole Bulgarian coastline. The resort is a haven for the yuppies, swarming here in huge crowds each summer, taking advantage of the numerous holiday homes, hotels, student\'s boarding rooms and camping sites. The centre of the town is tightly packed with buildings, while the International Youth Centre and the area by the sea offer pleasant conditions for a stroll with unforgettable sights. The town of Primorsko is a youthful borough with a lot of cafés, discotheques, booming music till midnight and cheap snack bars. Here you can enjoy the youthful atmosphere and everlasting parties. The town of Primorsko is located on the cape, dividing the bay of Stamopolo and the Devil\'s bay. The name of the old village, which was sited on the site of the modern town, was Chenger, later renamed to Kyupria.

The village of Kiten is a resort settlement, which exists solely for the pleasure from a vacation, and is far more natural and pleasant than the big resorts with their monstrous complexes. It is situated 56 kilometres to the south of the town of Bourgas, and has a population of 910 people. It is sited on a peninsula,  surrounded by two picturesque bays. The village of Kiten has two beaches – the northern one and the southern one. The northern beach “Atliman”, also known as the Children\'s beach, with fine sands and calm sea is wind-protected, while the southern beach, which is bigger, borders on the estuary of the Kitenska river – rich in chubs, carps and barbels. The season here starts from May and goes on till October.

The region of Tzarevo is in fact the southernmost part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. Here economic development is heavily linked to industry – production of small sea vessels, wood-working, food and beverages and agriculture, with its predominant branch of horticulture. The forests\' utilization is carried out  by the four forestries. The county of Tzarevo encompasses the south-eastern part of Bulgaria and is situated some 60 kilometres to the south of the town of Bourgas.  The exuberance of landmarks makes it one of the most attractive counties in the Bourgas province. The unique combination of sea, mountain and rivers with exotic greenery offer various opportunities for the development of all kinds of tourism – eco, yachting, photo and hobby tourism, hunting one, etc. In the town of Tzarevo is the first Bulgarian port, coming from the south border of the country. In 1995, the port was declared an international one. The town has great expectations, that the newly-opened port will gradually become a vivid tourist, transport and commercial centre, and will immensely facilitate the yachting and sea tourism. The town already enjoys the attention of Czechs and Slovaks, and recently tourists from western countries. The beach is meticulously cleaned and tidied. The visitors of the beach can enjoy some special thrills, like a ride on a banana or a water wheel. Near the town of Tzarevo is the village of Bulgari, an folklore reserve, keeping the authentic Bulgarian custom of the  fir-dancing.

The town of Ahtopol is situated 87 kilometres to the south of the town of Bourgas and 477 kilometres to the south-east of the capital city of Sofia. It is a sea resort, sited on a rocky peninsula at the foot of the Strandzha mountain. Here the sunny days are more and the temperature of the water is higher, than the rest of the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. The beach line is long 2 kilometres. For people, seeking quiet rest with less or no entertainments, this town is just the right answer. Known to the ancient Greeks as Agatopolis, today the town is a quiet, tucked away place, very popular with Bulgarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Russians and Macedonians, coming for a rest. Even the plethora of new building sites along the  “Kraymorska” seaside street cannot break the tranquillity, emanating from the fishing boats, lazily patrolling to and fro in the tiny post\'s bay.

The village of Sinemoretz is the southernmost and the most enticing point on the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. The exceptional scenery will charm you at once. Here you can relish the unique combination of sea, river and forest: you can bathe in the crystal clear sea water and go fishing in the most clean of all the rivers in Bulgaria – the Veleka river.  The village in fact resides in the heart of an unique nature reserve, encompassing the basins of the Veleka and Rezovska rivers, the cut in romantic bays Bulgarian Black Sea coast and the forested tops of the Strandzha mountain. Here the wind and the smell of the sea, the fresh mountainous coolness of the Strandzha mountain, swarming in game and rare birds in the oak and beech forests, and the eternally tranquil waters of the Veleka river all meet.

The county of Sozopol includes the Chernomoretz, Ravadinovo and Atia villages. The oldest town on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is situated 34 kilometres to the south of Bourgas on a picturesque rocky peninsula. The enticing atmosphere of the town, the two beaches and the typical houses of Sozopol from the XIX century A.D., bringing in an additional touch of romanticism, have all made the town a preferred resort for many tourists.

The Dyuni resort is a modern one, situated 40 kilometres to the south of the town Bourgas near the sea, at a big bay. The beach is 4,5 kilometres long with width of more than 100 metres, covered with fine  sands and furrowed by natural dunes.  The coast, where the resort settlement sites, is hilly, surrounded by forests and studded with tiny villas of typical Bulgarian Revival architecture. As a set for the complex the natural landmarks of the place – the dunes and the abundance of greenery, are used. The complex is a mixture of several architectural styles, complimenting each other and as a whole depicting the Mediterranean and typical Bulgarian atmosphere.  Luxurious and expensive, especially for the individual tourists, the Dyuni resort offers plethora of entertainments and wonderful conditions for relaxation. At the north end of the complex there is a quay, which forms a quiet and calm bay, especially convenient for windsurfing and yachting. The complex has several swimming pools, seven tennis courts, and numerous facilities and services. To the south of the Dyuni resort is situated the swamp  “Alepu”, home to local and migrating fauna of all kinds.  A little further from the swamp is the so called Zmiysky (Snake\'s) island, best known for the cactuses, which have spread and got acclimatized there some 60 years ago.  Some 10 kilometres from there is the national nature park “Ropotamo”,  famous for its water lilies.

The village of Chernomoretz is situated 25 kilometres away from the town of Bourgas and only 9 kilometres away from the ancient town of Sozopol. The resort settlement boasts four beach stripes, each of them differing greatly from the others. Here you can find lonely tranquil beaches as well as bustling ones. The high temperatures of the sea and the air give you the option to enjoy the seaside till late in the afternoon. The unique position of the resort offers one the opportunity to enjoy the beach of the calm north bay with unbelievable cliffs and to move just 1,5 kilometres to the beach of the camping site “Gradina”, where the bay is particularly suitable for windsurfers  and other  lovers of extreme sea sports and thrills.  The rocky coast in the eastern part of the settlement is the perfect place for nudists, cliff jumpers and anglers. The resort of Chernomoretz boasts numerous cafés, sited in tiers along the coast or the so called “trading avenue”, some even nestled in the greenery of a typical rural court.

The region of Strandzha is a fascinating part of Bulgaria. Through it meander  the two cleanest rivers of Bulgaria – the Veleka and Resovska rivers. In the north-eastern part of the Strandzha mountain are nestled small villages like Novo Panicharevo and Yasna Polyana, in the western part – the village of Indzhe Voivoda, and to the south in the direction of the town of Malko Turnovo -  the village of Brashlyan. The whole region possesses unique opportunities to foster the development of rural tourism, especially considering its old houses and virgin nature.
